Sorry guys,
I've been searching for about an hour now about transmission fluid type and amount for my 2000 L. I'm swapping the stall converter and am going to change the fluid. I also have a 4x4 pan and a valve body going in. Can any of you please confirm that I have this correct:
My choices:
(1) Ford Motorcraft Mercon V
or
(2) Mercon III (from a parts store, Walmart, etc.)

Either one seems to be about 7 qts. for just a change and 17 qts for a full flush. Not sure if I need a full flush though. Also, I'm assuming it's a good idea to change the filter with a 4x4 filter. Let me know. Thanks!!

4x4 Filter

Yes You Need the 4x4 Filter ATP part # B-172 it is Deeper and with the New converter It will be a Flush I have used Motorcraft, Mobile 1, Poyal Purple, and a Universal fluid that a Friend got me for Free, It all seems to work fine, My 2 cents JUST Keep it Clean!!

I've just been a bit confused as I see different types, differing opinions, and there doesn't seem to be a clear-cut answer.

Read your dipstick.

If you're wanting to know the exact fluid that your truck came with from the factory then that will tell you which exact fluid that your truck came with from the factory. This has been confirmed by many Ford techs as well as SVT hotline help when they were still a thing.

UNLESS YOU BY THE FLUID DIRECTLY FROM FORD. THEN YOU CAN ONLY BUY FORDS MERCON V.

The
answer is cut and dry. Ford no longer makes Mercon. Mercon is a registered trademark of Ford.

If you buy fluid from Ford, it will be Fords Motorcraft MerconV.
Ford stopped making Mercon years ago in 2006. Fords Motorcraft MerconV was reformulated and is now considered a "dual usage fluid" and is approved for all of it's Mercon applications.

If you go anywhere else (parts store) just buy regular Dextron/Mercon fluid and DO NOT buy any other brand of MerconV aside from Fords Motorcraft MerconV. Any other MerconV will damage the internal seals.

If you want the info on the Ford Mercon/MerconV fluid change over, look up ford TSB
06-14-4.

Here is the PDF file of Fords Automatic Transmission fluid charts. (ONLY FORD FLUIDS APPLY)

Our transmissions are 4R100 3rd from the left.

I use Motorcraft MerconV only because I get it for free. If I had to pay for it, I would be going to the parts store and buying Dex/Merc.
