My 2003 Lightning has been mad at me lately.

My son and I were on the way home when I noticed what I thought was brakes making noise.

Brakes on rear showed 350 brakes on front showed 95.

We pulled it into the shop and let it cool down. It freed up and allowed us to spin the wheels much easier forward, but backward was a real task.

Took the rear wheels and brakes/rotors off and still felt the binding, especially backwards.

Disconnected the driveshaft and the rear end spins just fine.

The driveshaft however still binds when spinning backwards.

Is it normal for there to be more resistant spinning one way or the other?

Thanks In advance

Was the trans in gear? Neutral?

Your rear brakes being hot tells me there is an issue in the rear end. 350 is a lot of heat. Enough to cook bearings, grease, seals, boil brake fluids.

Neutral.
I called a Chris at A1 and he said the resistance one way is normal.

Now I need to hunt down where the heat is coming from. It has to be calipers sticking or something because once it cools down the issues isn’t as bad.

Well calipers stickoing should be obvious. I park mine in a garage with an ever-so-slight tilt downhill. When I start it, I put it in neutral, take my foot off the brake, and it rolls ever so slowly toward the opening. If the brakes were sticking, it wouldn't do that. I can also open the door with it in neutral, and with one foot, make it start rolling, either way. 2004, just turned 74,000 miles last week. Still has the stock brake pads, with lots of material left on them. I downshift the transmission manually and use engine braking to help slow it down. Sometimes, I can slow down for a light, and never even put my foot on the brake pedal.

Sticking calipers with age is common. Rebuilt rears are cheap.

I guess I will go ahead and change the calipers and see if things get any better.
The issue is that they are not sticking all of the time if it is the brakes.
I felt the truck stop itself once I got it to the shop, where as on the way it was driving fine. Once it gets hot is when it’s sticking.
