Installed my new JLP sheet metal intake today

Just installed JLP's sheet metal intake on my built KB motor. Mods as follows:

New Ford crank with oiling mods
Billet Crower rods
CP custom pistons with ceramic barrier coating
Stage II cams by Crower to Dante's specs
Fully ported heads, titanium retainers, ported intake manifold
KB blower
JLP intake
Accufab t.b.
SCT Big Air MAF
SCT Pro Racer tuning
Bassani cat-back

Just got 1200 miles on the combo. Had a C&L intake installed with the new engine. With the swap from the C&L intake to the sheet metal JLP I picked up 1 psi of boost with the above mods. That tells me that even the C&L intake is still restrictive on a built KB motor and the factory intake is really restrictive.

Just an fyi. The install is pretty straightforward, but try as I may the blower must be removed. I actually got the C&L intake off and three of the four adaptor plate bolts off the KB with the blower in place. But I finally figured it would be impossible to install the JLP piece without removing the blower anyway. Mine has the new machined area for firewall clearance, but the firewall still hit on the rear of the plenum anyway. Slight denting with a piece of round aluminum stock and a hammer and all was well. The fit overall was nice, all the plumbing bolts up as normal. I had a slight mis-match between the EGR tube and valve but loosening the EGR valve itself at the intake allowed everything to bolt up.

For you who love to hear the blower, this intake ups the noise quite noticeably! It is a lot louder at part throttle which is cool. Add in the 1 psi of boost I gained over the C&L unit plus the fact that the intakes are on sale this month, and it was a win-win situation for me.

Very interesting Jody!
(BTW: How's the new motor feel? / Are you going to that dyno day? - Would be cool to meet you.)

On mine, I think we got like 2-3 lbs of boost over the extrude-honed ported intake I had.
The motor was running lean despite the 50# injectors and dual 255lph fuel pumps, so in
went a KB Boost-A-Pump to fix that problem.

Back on the dyno, the numbers didn't happen as it appeared my stock header, stock cat combo was choking off the power.
So, we back down the upper pulley from 3" to 3.5" so I'm only pushing 15 lbs of boost now.

Previously at 15lbs of boost and the extrude-honed intake
(I saw ~1 lb of boost over stock with this), I was making 540 rwhp.

At 17lbs of boost and the extrude-honed intake, I was making 563.

With the sheetmetal intake, at 15 lbs of boost, I'm making 555 rwhp.
So that's a net gain of 15hp while turning the KB slower than I did previously to get the same boost.

I was really hoping the combo that made 563 would have jumped to 580.
Do you think that 600 rwhp is impossible through the stock headers/cats?

I have been on the fence with the long-tube header idea.
On one hand, they sound cool and give you power.

On the other hand, with CA smog I'd have to swap them out every 2 yrs for the inspection
with the stockers despite having cats, and they are LOUD.

The new motor feels great now that I have some miles on it. It is a lot stronger at 15 psi than the other one was at 20 psi with all the same bolt-ons. I gained 1 psi at the 15# level, but that was over a C&L unit that outflows the stock manifold by a fair amount. The gain may have been more at the 18-20 psi level, not sure.

I have the same smog issues as you. They did just change the smog times this month. My 03 isn't due until 2009, so I've got 4 years before I have to worry about it. I do have a set of Bassani shorties coming which are legal. I think they will make some difference over the manifolds, but not as much as the LT's do. I cannot live with the noise of a full exhaust. I've tried two different combos and both were far too loud for me on a 20K per year daily driver.

I think we can reach 600 rwhp with the stock manifolds and cats, without nitrous. I will be attending a dyno day here at the end of the month and will be doing my best to reach that on the race tune. I'd expect to be in the 560-575 range on the street side (hopefully). I'll see you there!

Yeah, I feel that the gain will be higher at the 18-20 psi level as well.
Do the Bassani shorties have a CARB number?
I called them a few months back and they mentioned they didn't have one.
They should be able to get one easily given it doesn't move the position of the cats.
I won't have my truck... still fighting to get it shipped here from PA... long story.

So, if I go to the dyno day it will be to see some fast trucks and meet people such as yourself.
Great News Jody, sounds like that JLP Upper has some power in it, WOO HOO.....

WOW you got a list of the best goodies, BOTH OF YOU
Ok I'm jelous

But with my Nitrous I will do just fine :D

Best of Luck on Dyno Day Jody
and I hope you get yours back soon Airtroop
Jody, I cant wait to get my JLP actually ON the truck instead of sitting on the workbench :D

Seroiusly, I cant wait to get all my bits and pieces together........... seeing what you and airtroop are putting down.....I am in for a treat :D

Yeah, I'm very interested to see what you are going to lay down KB ZILLA...
What pulley combination are you running? Do you have ported heads?
Your rwhp numbers should be very nice with the longtubes and the plenum.
I'd guess 600 rwhp with 18 lbs of boost.

:LOL
