Road raced my truck this weekend :)

So I took my truck to bimmerfest the weekend and raced it at the fontana speedway roval course. Had a hell of a time driving and met my goal of shaming a bunch of high end BMW's. I was the second fastest driver in my run group, a lot of the other driviers' jaws dropped when the saw me whipping around the track in my lightning and passing them up haha Overall, really happy with the trucks handling I just need to lower it a little more and run shorter gears in it for that little extra bit of acceleration.

So I first started with cooling, I got the flexalite dual electric fans which work wonders, plus a navigator fuel pump, also a bigger heat exchanger. It was about 86 out there but running full tilt the engine never broke 200 temp wise. Even then that was running at 130 mph on the straight.

Best upgrades by far for handling were the hellwig swaybar for the rear, stifflers x-brace, broncobeater panhard bar, and a rear spyder brace made by broncobeater as well. Since it was a 99 I upgraded to the bilstein shocks which did wonders in handling! I also put polyurethane bushings in for the controls arms but for how little they noticably helped it wasn't worth the struggle. Also I have a bumpsteer kit from LFP which was really helpful when merging onto the oval portion of the track.

Brake wise I bought some EBC yellowstuff pads and man do the STOP!! Kinda pricey but they really did wonders. I'd suggest setting up a cooling duct system for the breaks too, you could live without it but it sure did help when I needed to go from 110 to about 30 mph haha

Also I got a TA diff cover for extra diff fluid to keep the rear end cool.

The trucks has a few power adders but for this I don't think it really needed them, its damn fast on the track though compared to the other cars.

For sure the big ones to get would be the X-brace, panhard bar, rear sway bar (front stock is fine because the stiffer rear reduces understeer), and good racing pads. I've autocrossed without those pieces and the truck is really tough to keep from understeering and is more likely to kick out the tail as well. these parts make the truck handle like a sports car. With my mods, I beat an M coupe by over 5 seconds and also my friend's M3's best time on that track (well before he bought coilovers) Still I'm only five seconds behind his no best

Sounds fun man! How often do these events happen? I'm not too far from Fontana and would love to take my truck some time

Next race at fontana is June 11 and 12 I believe, check out speedventures.com they host the event first time racers get a 30 dollar discount and if you don't want to do the road race you can always autocross. The cool thing is they host races everywhere like Sonoma, Laguna Seca, Buttonwillow, Circuit of the Americas. May be a tad pricey for some but its worth the money no doubt considering you get plenty of drive time.
