Cool ***4V GT/GT500/CJ HD*** Harley#356 goes off the deep end in 2017!

A lot of you folks have already heard, especially if you've followed my 2015/2016 refresh thread (Harley#356's 2015/2016 Refresh Progress Thread...), but it's official now!

The Scoop:

I'm going 4 valve, and not just any 4 valve, but GT supercar 4 valve.

I'm going big bore, and not just any big bore, but GT supercar aluminum block with 3.7 darton wet sleeved big bore.

I'm going bigger KB, and not just any big KB, but the GT500/Cobra Jet setup with a monstrous 4.7 KB.

Why the sudden change so soon? I did just get my 2015/2016 refresh finished up, put ~300 miles on it and enjoyed the heck out of driving on the street again after so long down, but unfortunately I had issues at Spookfest. Bank 2 had lean issues, and trans had shifting issues. Only made 1-1/2 passes. Truck was as mild as can be with 15* and 20 lbs of boost, but it's partly my own fault for making a full pass first hit and not stepping into it easier after hurting it last time from a fuel issue. New injectors, new wiring harness, soft tune up, low boost, normal timing, but I have another gremlin lurking. Going to send my Weldon pump out for a refresh next, as well as do a racepak setup so I can datalog critical things like fuel pressure so I can stop guessing, and start knowing with certainty what is going on.

Long story short, I hurt #5 and #6. Not catastrophic, but enough. Coupled with the fact the trans had to come back out, just made sense to take it all out and do it finally how I've always wanted to do it.

In 2015 I hurt bank 1, and replaced that head with a new 8 thread XR head, and left bank 2 with inserts. Now I'll be replacing bank 2 with one more new 8 thread XR head, the engine will be back to 100% healthy with two 8 thread XR heads, and I'm selling it to help fund the new build. MASSIVE part out thread coming tomorrow! Been giving local guys first dibs but the clock for them is up tomorrow when I open it up to the full LR community!

What about all that 2v love? I never said I would never go 4v, but it was never in my plans anytime soon. I loved the performance I had, and loved kicking azz with 2v heads beating up on other 2v L's with my bigger HD truck. But alas, times have changed. Combo's have started to vary even more in recent years, it's not as much 1 on 1 with basic 2v blower builds vs. basic 2v blower builds and seeing who had the edge. Not only has the community thinned out, what's left of it has also spread out in combos. Apples to apples competition was a BLAST because it showed who could go the fastest despite similar combos, but with those combos now changing so much, it's time for me to change with the times.

2008 I overtook the HD truck record from Sue @ JLP with my 10.91, and chopped away deeper and deeper into the 10's every year. Ran out of HD competition and started beating up on local L's, and in 2012 I was one of the fastest trucks in our local community, only a handful were faster, and one of the only local active guys with a faster truck than me was Carmelo, but I was faster than him in his own truck when I ran it LOL! 2013 I got into the 9's with my 9.89 and continued to lead the local pack for a couple more years running 9.8-9.9, DudeL nipping at my heals year after year but never getting by LOL!

During the last 1-1/2 years that I've been down doing my refresh, refreshing the entire bottom end, refreshing heads (now replacing the other head so they'll both be brand new), going 3.2 KB, etc. seems everyone and their mother has passed by me! DudeL for the first time in a decade beat me and went 9.85 lol, Redrum went turbo and flew past me, Uncle Frank and the silver storm blazed past me and left me in his 9.7 dust, Carmelo is running 9.60's on a daisy tune and 9.40 on full tilt, and there's others as well that either have some pretty bad builds going on right now that my simple old 2v, iron block, non-big-bore, non-high compression isn't going to keep up with. It'll still haul azz and I think would have went 9.5's with the 3.2 KB, but 9.5's are looking like the new benchmark. Lots of high 9 second trucks now, very few mid 9's, and I can count on one hand how many still streetable blower powered gen 2's are low 9's. I don't want to be in the pack, I want to lead the pack!

So this last gremlin in addition to seeing my standing against the other local L's drop like a rock was my sign, it's time to move back up. In addition, some absolutely mind blowing deals came right across my lap at literally the most perfect timing you could imagine that I could not say no to for unicorn parts at absurd prices.

Friday - hurt truck at spookfest
Less than a week later- scored an insane deal on an aluminum GT supercar block, brand new, wet sumped, darton 3.7 big bore wet sleeved
2 days later - scored an insane deal on a polished 4.7 KB kit (blower, plenum, tb, 5" intake, 4 belts, 4 pullies, thump billet tensioner!) all with 200 whopping miles on it
2 days later - scored an insane deal on a set of GT supercar 4v heads, fully worked by Mihovetz of accufab

I can't make that $h!t up! The timing was literally perfect. Just as I was deciding what to do, BAM GT big bore already done at insane price. Then deciding if I should squirrel it and build later or do it now, BAM 4.7 KB barely used for insane price. Then deciding what heads do I want to do, go nuts 4v or what, and BAM GT supercar head deal dangling out there still available.

I'm going to have JLP do the rotating assembly build the bottom end, spec the cams with his special bump sticks, assemble the longblock, etc. It'll be the "Harley Jet" compliment to his "Lightning Jet" LOL!

I've already got a GT500 timing chain cover coming, GT500 thermostat housing assembly, GT500 valve covers. I still need a Cobra Jet lower intake manifold, and all of the GT500 accessories (PS pump, Alt, pullies, etc.)

Stay tuned......

oh and gotta give kudo's to the local crew on helping get things pulled out.

Saturday night in 4 hours I took it from a fully assembled, running truck, down to a bare longblock and front end entirely off the truck. Sunday morning Carmelo, George, and Mike came by and helped me yank the engine, took all of 1/2 hour with 25 minutes of that being BS'ing lol. Then those guys split, I got the truck sky high, pulled the driveshaft, midpipes, trans lines, wiring harness, etc., and Carmelo swung back by to lend a hand dropping the 4R100 down. So about 5 hours total from fully running, to fully gutted. Pretty impressive, wish it went together that fast! LOL!

Have you considered something other than the 4R100 for the new build? i know you got a new CF driveshaft, but with a brake, a TH400 or a C6 would be lighter and give you a better low gear.

While I'd love to put something other than the 4R100 in there, that'll all come in due time. I see far too many guys go into a build that really steps off a cliff and they're down for years, and evolves into an entirely different monster without even getting to enjoy it along the way. Same would go for the comments that I know are going to come "why not go turbo it'll be faster"!

If I swapped to a different style trans now, I'd also need to swap the driveshaft. If I'm swapping the driveshaft, there's no better time than at that same time to change to a 9" rear since that also requires a different driveshaft. If I'm changing to a 9" rear, there's no better time than at the same time to change to a 4 link. If I'm changing to a 4 link, there's no better time than at the same time to do a mini-tub so I can fit a bigger tire set. Well if I'm doing a rear, 4-link, mini-tub, heck should we just back half it right then? If I'm back halfing it, heck what do I need this big steel bed for, time for carbon fiber. LOL See how fast that spirals?

Drawing the line at the motor for now allows me to get all of that stuff done, not be down for years on end, and get to enjoy the truck for a bit before it's back down for more work and then at a later time I can always do a trans/ds/rear/suspension/tub/etc. Same goes for the turbo route. In due time, but not yet, I'm not done playing around with blowers.

16 years into fiddling with this truck, with zero plans of changing course. Other toys will come and go, but this one I'm sticking to for the long haul. So I'm not in a rush to jump to the absolute most bad azz insane ultimate combo all at once. I have fun with it at each level of the game!

I've never "argued" with Chris over how he builds his transmissions. I've never built one so I don't even know the first thing about transmissions to argue over. I have said I didn't feel a trans brake that adds 70-100 lbs would be worth anything on a 4R100 s/c truck, and even he hasn't put one on his own 4R100 s/c truck, but I wouldn't call that arguing lol.

I know guys who have had failed A1 transmissions, and guys who have had failed JLP transmissions, and guys who have had failed BTS transmissions, etc. etc. etc. Fortunately I only need to drive 2 hours to drop mine off, vs. spending $400 or whatever it would be in freight to ship it out.

Billet Pro Shop has some badass engine mounts for that aluminum block. Takes a little cutting on the crossmember, just enough to hold the nut when tightening the bolt, but they are nice. They were designed for use in the GT500, but we can use them with the modification.

I was planning on using my same autofab mounts. I'll have to checkout the billet pro shop stuff though. I know they make a nice single belt drive conversion setup.

GT500 guys run them all the time on their factory forged cranks. The 4v setup isn't slung way out like it is our 2v setups. My plan is just a CJ crank. A 3500 billet crank isn't in the cards for this round.
